IPL 2026: PBKS should release Glenn Maxwell and target these three players before the auction

Punjab Kings (PBKS) had a memorable campaign in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 as they made the final for the first time since 2014. However, legendary Australian all-rounder Glenn Maxwell, who brought a wealth of experience and a bankable option to his name, failed to perform up to his potential in the season.

PBKS signed Maxwell for Rs 4.2 crore in the IPL 2025 mega-auction in Saudi Arabia. The Punjab-based franchise had a familiar setup, with Australian icon Ricky Ponting serving as the head coach and other compatriots like Josh Inglis, Marcus Stoinis, Aaron Hardie and Xavier Bartlett in the squad. Maxwell also had prior experience playing for the franchise between 2014 and 2017 and one more season in 2020.

However, Maxwell could score only 48 runs in seven matches at an average of 8.00 and strike rate of 97.96. With the ball, he performed comparatively better and took four wickets at an average of 27.50. The 36-year-old broke his finger midway through the campaign and was subsequently replaced by his fellow Australian teammate and all-rounder, Mitchell Owen.

Here are 3 possible replacements PBKS should consider for Glenn Maxwell

3. Matthew Short (Australia)

matthew short He has previously played for Punjab Kings as a replacement for the injured Jonny Bairstow during the IPL 2023 season. He played six matches but failed to make much of an impact. Last year, the right-handed batsman went unsold in the IPL mega-auction. Short has performed well in franchise leagues around the world. He has also been a regular fixture in Australia's T20 squad in recent months.

The top-order batsman's all-round ability as a part-time off-spinner could make him an ideal replacement for Maxwell. He is a destructive batsman, but also adapts his game to different match situations. The 29-year-old player can bat at the top of the order and can also play the role of a finisher. His versatile talent will be useful to Punjab. He has also played for the franchise in the past and this may help him settle in quickly.
