England were reduced to 21 from Australia’s 180 for 68 and 120 for 5.
Jones had a free-hit from the final ball of the 48th over, which was bowled by Tahlia McGrath as Annabel Sutherland was removed from the attack for bowling two high full tosses in the over. Jones left a ball to deep square and did not run, either forgetting that it was the last ball of the over or forgetting that it was a free-hit.
No. 11 Lauren Bell left on strike at the start of the 49th over. Bell survived 15 balls for one run, but could not make it to the 16th as Megan Schutt edged her off stump to seal Australia’s victory.
But Knight was supportive of Jones afterwards, suggesting the rest of the batting needed to be braver.
“It’s disappointing,” Knight told BBC TMS. “I think it was there for the taking. Wickets cost us. We need to be braver with the bat.
“Amy was very good at keeping us in the game. She was trying to face the majority of balls and pick up boundaries.
“We’re really close. We just need to do some things better in some areas and be braver with the bat.”
Capsey was asked whether he and Jones had taken more risks to spread the field as Australia placed extra fielders in the ring to apply pressure.
“Potentially, we could have bowled the bowlers a little more than their lines and lengths,” Capeci said. “It’s something we have to reflect on. But in that situation, how we thought the best way to play the situation was to play the ball on merit. We knew we could get the balls to rotate the strike. We were going to do it, and we knew we were going to punish some bad balls. That’s us at our best.
“So I didn’t think we needed to over complicate things. In that situation, if we lose an extra wicket or too early, maybe we get criticized too early for taking an extra shot. So that In the situation, it’s a no-win.
Capsey believes England can bounce back despite having only two days to prepare ahead of Friday’s third ODI in Hobart.
“There will be a lot of reflection, a lot of disappointment tonight,” Capsey said. “But as soon as we get back into our plans and reflect and see what we can do, analyze it all… once we get to Hobart it’s a new The day comes and we go at them, go at them, go at them. Just as hard as we can, and just try to focus on ourselves. Stay on the pitch.”
