Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) faced another tough season as they finished seventh on the points table despite a late resurgence. Under the leadership of Ajinkya Rahane, KKR has been ranked eighth and seventh in the last two seasons. However, former India opener Wasim Jaffer said that the Knights should continue with the experienced batsman as captain as there are no other options available.
Jaffer mentioned the name of Rinku Singh, but said that the younger batsman does not have much experience in captaincy and giving him additional responsibility may hamper his batting.
“At this stage, keep it intact. I don't see any other contender for captaincy. Rinku hasn't captained much. You don't want Rinku to cause trouble to the batsman. I don't think Rahane has captained that badly. Tactically, I don't think he has made any mistakes,” he said on his YouTube channel.
Jafar also supported Akshar Patel To continue his role as Delhi Capitals captain despite finishing fifth and sixth respectively in the last two seasons. However, the cricketer turned commentator mentioned some questionable selection calls from the DC management during IPL 2026.
“He hasn't done badly as a captain. His batting has flourished of late. Yes, I can talk about team selection, number of opportunities given to Nissanka etc, but Axar hasn't done a bad job. Stay tuned,” he said.
Wasim Jaffer on MI captaincy after poor performance in IPL 2026 season
Mumbai Indians (MI) finished ninth, above Lucknow Super Giants (LSG). Jaffer said that he will retain Hardik Pandya as a player but will relieve him of the responsibility of captaincy.
He said, “I will not make him captain, but he will definitely be retained. I want him to come out openly and give his best performance.”
Lastly, Jaffer talked about LSG captain Rishabh Pant and said that the Sanjiv Goenka-owned franchise should drop him in the auction and include him at a cheaper price. After securing a contract worth Rs 27 crore in the mega auction ahead of IPL 2025, Pant is the most expensive player in the league.
He said, “Keep him, but put him in the auction and try to buy him back cheap. You want him, but at a cheap price.”
