'You played bold and roared'

East Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) Owner Vijay Mallya took to X (formerly Twitter) to congratulate them for becoming the first team to qualify for the playoffs in the 2026 Indian Premier League (IPL). This comes after their win over Punjab Kings (PBKS) at the HPCA Stadium in Dharamshala on Sunday, May 17.

In this post Mallya called the defending champion “Namma Dodda Simhagulu,” Which roughly translates to “our big lion”. The former boss said how proud he is of RCB for making it to the latter stages of this year's tournament and described them as the best players he has ever seen in the IPL.

After RCB's stunning win over PBKS, Vijay Mallya posted on the social media platform, “RCB, RCB, RCB Namma Dodda Simhagulu… You made all of us very proud today – the first team to qualify. You played bold and roared even louder like the Bengaluru lions. Well done and congratulations. Onwards and onwards to the best team in the IPL.”

After their win in Dharamshala, RCB are on top of the points table having earned 18 points from 13 matches. If they win their last game of the regular season, which is against Sunrisers Hyderabad at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium on Friday, May 22, they have a chance to finish the league stage inside the top two.

Rajat Patidar's team now has a chance to defend their last year's title and thus become the third team in IPL history to retain the trophy. The two teams to achieve the feat are Chennai Super Kings, who won it in 2010 and 2011, and Mumbai Indians, who won the honor consecutively in 2019 and 2020.

PBKS, on the other hand, have now lost six consecutive matches, putting their playoff chances in jeopardy. Shreyas Iyer's team is still at fourth place in the standings with 13 points from 13 matches.
