Kolkata Knight Riders' decision to release title-winning captain Shreyas Iyer ahead of the IPL 2025 mega-auction was shocking, especially after he led the franchise to its first trophy in a decade. Despite initial discussions about retention, Iyer revealed that a lack of communication from KKR ultimately led to his exit.

The decision almost immediately backfired for Kolkata as the star batsman was bought by Punjab Kings for a record Rs 26.75 crore. Subsequently, Iyer led Punjab to the IPL final in the same year. While KKR has backed its long-standing core, the franchise is still believed to be hurt by the departure of the captain who led them to the title.
