Tim David suspended from first match of IPL 2027 after violating code of conduct during RCB vs GT final

tim davidThe Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) batsman has been fined 50 per cent of his match fee and accrued two demerit points for breaching Level 1 of the ICC Code of Conduct during the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 final against Gujarat Titans (GT) on Sunday, May 31.

The right-handed batsman was accused of aggressively throwing the ice bag at on-field umpire Nitin Menon during the 10th over of the first innings when the Titans were batting. To be precise, the incident occurred after the fall of a wicket (Washington Sundar was caught by Jordan Cox, but was later declared not out).

David was found to have breached Article 2.9 of the IPL Code of Conduct, which relates to “throwing the ball (or any other item of cricket equipment such as a water bottle) in an unfair and/or dangerous manner at or near a player, team official, umpire, match referee or any other third person during a match.”

After earning five demerit points in the recently concluded IPL season, the Australian batsman will miss RCB's first game in the next IPL season or the first game of the franchise he represents in IPL 2027. After his stellar contribution during the last two seasons for RCB, it is highly unlikely that he will play for any other franchise in the last season.

This was David's third Level 1 offense of the season, having committed his first offense in match 20 (one demerit point) and his second in match 54 (two demerit points). David pleaded guilty and accepted the penalty imposed by the experienced match referee, Javagal Srinath.

How was Tim David's performance in IPL 2026?

Tim David had a memorable time during the season. Although he did not face very many balls (only 162 in 15 innings), he managed to make an impact more often than not whenever he came out to bat.

During the season, he scored 305 runs at an average of 33.89 and a strike rate of 188.28. His only half-century in IPL 2026 came against Chennai Super Kings at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium. He scored unbeaten 70 runs in just 25 balls. Also in the final, he stitched a crucial 41-run partnership with Virat Kohli to lead the Rajat Patidar-led franchise to a five-wicket win.
