former indian batsman Sunil Gavaskar An incident has come to light about a member of the IPL Governing Council personally writing a letter to the captains of the then eight IPL teams, asking for suggestions to improve the tournament.
“Many years ago when I was on the IPL Governing Council, I, in my personal capacity, wrote letters to the captains of eight franchises asking how the IPL could be made even better than it was,” Gavaskar wrote in his column for Mid Day.
Gavaskar said that he was given an interesting suggestion adam gilchristThe captain of the now defunct Deccan Chargers, who recommended a format in which the teams finishing first and second in the points table would get another chance to make it to the finals.
He said, “Most people responded and although there was no big suggestion, it was unique for Adam Gilchrist to recommend that the teams that achieved one and two other successes in the title be rewarded with qualifiers and eliminators.”
Gavaskar revealed that he was 'pulled up' by another member of the IPL governing body, who questioned the ability in which Gavaskar wrote to the captains of all the teams. Gavaskar told the person concerned that this was done in his personal capacity and that these suggestions would be sent to the Governing Council for consideration. He said the suggestions were accepted, giving rise to the playoff format that is seen in the tournament to this day.
“I was pulled up by a member of the Governing Council, who asked on whose authority I had written to the franchise captains asking for their suggestions. I told them that I had written in my personal capacity as a former captain and player with the sole intention of seeing how we could make the IPL even better and that they did not need anyone's permission to write. Now it is up to the Governing Council to accept it or not. They did and now it is something That's what every franchise tries to do, so that they can get another piece of the cherry,” Gavaskar said.
Gavaskar previously served on the Governing Council of the IPL for three seasons. In 2014, he was made the BCCI Chairman for IPL matters following the Supreme Court's decision following the 2013 IPL spot-fixing scandal.
