sanju samson continues to scale new heights in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 season, reaching a major career milestone while representing Chennai Super Kings (CSK). The stylish right-handed opening batsman has become the 10th batsman overall in IPL history to score 5000 runs and the eighth Indian to achieve the feat, further cementing his place among the league's standout performers.
Samson's consistency and aggressive stroke play have been the standout features this season. He became the fastest Indian to reach the 5000-run mark in terms of balls faced by achieving the feat in just 3555 balls. Only AB de Villiers and David Warner have reached the milestone faster, which underlines the magnitude of Samson's achievement.
The 2026 season has been particularly impressive for Samson, who has already scored two centuries. So far, in eight matches, he has scored 304 runs at an excellent average of 50.67 and an explosive strike rate of 169.83. His contributions have often come in crucial situations, showing both his maturity and match-winning ability. Samson was bought by Rajasthan Royals (RR) for Rs 18 crore before the mini-auction by giving away Ravindra Jadeja and Sam Curran.
CSK had a tough start to their campaign and suffered defeats against RR, Punjab Kings (PBKS) and Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB). However, due to the bravery of Samson they made a strong comeback. His unbeaten 115 against Delhi Capitals (DC) played a vital role in reviving their campaign.
After this he played another match-winning inning of 101* against Mumbai Indians and held the innings when the wickets were falling at the other end. His calm approach under pressure ensured CSK's third win of the season. Earlier, for India, he won the Player of the Tournament award by scoring three fifties in important matches in the T20 World Cup 2026 and led the Indian team to its third trophy.
As CSK continue their campaign, they will face Gujarat Titans (GT) at the MA Chidambaram Stadium. Meanwhile, GT are seventh on the table with three wins and four losses, and will be keen to improve their position as the tournament progresses.
