Tendulkar has recently suggested some changes in the rules of T20 cricket. He urged IPL stakeholders to restore the balance between bat and ball and hoped that the impact player rule should be removed.
“The impact player needs to go away. Uh, that's my personal opinion. I think when in the T20 format, you just have to play 20 overs, and then you're adding another batsman to that lineup,” the Master Blaster said at the ESPNcricinfo awards for the greatest international cricketers of the 21st century, a night before the IPL 2026 final between Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) and Gujarat Titans. His second suggestion was also in favor of the bowlers, as he said that the traditional six-over power play should be divided into one innings. There must be mandatory batting power plays in the first four overs, with two fielders allowed outside the 30-yard circle. However, the fielding captain should be allowed to use the remaining two overs whenever he wants. Also, three fielders will be allowed to go out of the ring in these two overs.
“The other suggestion might be to have, uh, six overs of power play with field restrictions, allowing only two fielders outside the ring. Let the first four overs be the batsman's power play with the same field restrictions, and after that, the remaining two power play overs should be determined by the fielding captain when he wants to take them. But those two consecutive overs will also get an extra fielder outside the ring at any stage of the game. So, you know, you better control the game. This is my personal feeling,” Tendulkar suggested.
And a bowler should be allowed to bowl five overs: Tendulkar
In the end Tendulkar said that a bowler should be allowed to bowl a maximum of five overs. He said that on some occasions the top batsmen bat for the full 20 overs and the best bowlers should also get a chance to make a greater impact.
“And a bowler should be allowed to bowl five overs. Five overs? Yes. Yes. Because you know, obviously, the best bowler in the team will bowl that fifth over. Wouldn't you like to see that best bowler bowling more? Absolutely. Like, like, you know, the top batsmen are sometimes batting 20 overs as well. Why shouldn't the best bowler bowl five overs?” the 53-year-old asked.
