Defending champion Royal Challengers Bangalore has confirmed its place in the playoffs. Indian Premier League With an impressive 23-run win over Punjab Kings at the HPCA Stadium on 17 May. During Punjab's innings, RCB posted '49/3 (6 overs)' on Twitter, with the post widely seen as a sarcastic take on PBKS's previous social media activity. The reference is to April 28, when Punjab posted '49/1 (4.3 overs)' during their clash against Rajasthan Royals. That post indirectly mocked RCB's infamous defeat against Kolkata Knight Riders in IPL 2017, where Bengaluru were bowled out for just 49 runs, which is still the lowest score in IPL history.
After being asked to bat first, RCB produced a brilliant all-round performance on the field. The innings started cautiously as Harpreet Brar dismissed Jacob Bethel early. However, Virat Kohli and Devdutt Padikkal turned the momentum in Bengaluru's favor with aggressive counterattacks. The pair added 76 runs in just 42 balls before Padikkal departed after a stormy 45.
Venkatesh Iyer then joined Kohli and ensured that the scoring rate never slowed down. Together they made an important partnership of 60 runs in 35 balls. Kohli continued his brilliant performance by scoring 58 runs in 37 balls before the wicket fell at the end of the innings. Tim David finished the match with a quickfire 28 runs in just 12 balls before being dismissed on the last ball.
Venkatesh remained unbeaten on 73 off 40 balls, registering his first half-century for RCB and taking the team to a strong score of 222 runs for 4 wickets in 20 overs.
In reply, Punjab Kings suffered an early defeat as Bhuvneshwar Kumar dismissed both the openers inside the first two overs. Rasikh Salam then provided another important breakthrough by dismissing PBKS captain Shreyas Iyer, leaving Punjab struggling at 19 for 3.
Cooper Connolly and Suryansh Shedge attempted to rebuild with a 43-run partnership, scoring 37 and 35 respectively. Shahsank Singh fought bravely, scoring a quickfire 56 off 27 balls, but the target proved too tough as RCB won comfortably and became the first team to qualify for the IPL 2026 playoffs.
