While anchoring the toss for the crucial match between Kolkata Knight Riders and Gujarat Titans, the former India head coach prematurely announced that the visiting team had already secured their mathematical qualification for the tournament play-offs.
The broadcast error occurred shortly after the visiting captain continued his remarkable run of luck at the toss. Shastri mistakenly informed the captain that his place in the playoffs was officially confirmed, even though qualification had not yet been mathematically decided.
Shastri asked during the toss, “You have already got the Q alphabet marked against your team, how are you paying attention to this?”
The mistake strongly mirrors a previous broadcast error made by Shastri during the global final in Ahmedabad. However, Gill decided not to correct the commentator on air. Instead, the opening batsman subtly redirected the conversation toward the team's internal standards and objectives. He stressed the importance of maintaining full focus during the remaining matches of the league stage.
Gill pointed out that it is important to score maximum points from their remaining matches to guarantee a top-two finish, which will provide the team with a valuable double chance in the knockout stage. The captain also underlined that the team has no intention of becoming complacent despite its strong position in the standings.
Gill said, “It's about how the momentum is with us and we have to keep doing the things we are doing well. This is not the stage or time to take any team lightly, but we are hoping to win the next two matches and hold on to the top two positions.”
Talking about the match, the host team was asked to bat first and scored a huge score of 247/2 in 20 overs. Ajinkya Rahane had another disappointing performance and could only score 14 runs. However, Finn Allen mounted a brilliant counterattack, scoring 93 runs in just 35 balls, which included four fours and 10 sixes.
Later in the innings, Angkrish Raghuvanshi and Cameron Green stitched a century partnership in the middle overs, with both batsmen scoring half-centuries to take the three-time champions to a huge total.
In the points table, Gujarat Titans are at the second position with 16 points from 12 matches, while Kolkata Knight Riders are at the eighth position with nine points from 11 matches.
