Before the game, Gladiators officially announced that Dinesh Chandimal will replace Bevon Jacobs in the team. However, confusion arose at the time of the toss when captain Saud Shakeel revealed that both Chandimal and Jacobs had been included in the playing eleven, contrary to what was earlier announced.
The unexpected move immediately sparked reaction and criticism on social media, with fans questioning how a replacement player and the replaced player could be in the same lineup. Addressing the situation, team general manager Nabil Hashmi clarified that the decision was due to one of their players falling ill, which forced the team to adjust their combination and include both players.
Despite the clarification, the incident has raised concerns over communication and clarity in team management within the league, leading to increasing scrutiny around the tournament.
“Tom Curran was unwell and had to stay in the hotel. Chandimal replaced Tom in this particular match,” Hashmi wrote on Twitter.
However, this situation also raised a major concern, as it effectively meant that Quetta Gladiators had an extra foreign player available, which could be seen as an unfair advantage over other teams in the Pakistan Super League.
The Gladiators performed strongly on the field. Ironically, Bevon, the player who initially had to be substituted, scored the winning run to give his team their third win of the tournament.
Earlier in the match, Usman Tariq performed brilliantly with the ball, picking up three crucial wickets and restricting Lahore Qalandars to a modest score of 134. In reply, Rilee Rossouw played a match-winning innings and scored an unbeaten half-century to give Quetta a comfortable win with 22 balls to spare.
