Coming to bat first, Punjab got a strong start from Priyansh Arya (27) and Prabhsimran Singh (57), who added 50 runs in 33 balls. Prabhasimran later stitched a 57-run partnership with Cooper Connolly as PBKS crossed the 100-run mark in the 12th over.
However, Mumbai pulled things back through Shardul Thakur, who took four wickets for 39 runs. He turned the momentum in Mumbai's favor by dismissing Prabhsimran and captain Shreyas Iyer (4) within three balls.
Even after scoring 53 runs in the last three overs, Punjab managed to reach 200 runs for 8 wickets. Azmatullah Umarzai scored 38 runs from 17 balls, while Vishnu Vinod and Xavier Bartlett added late runs.
Mumbai, chasing the target, was led by Ryan Rickelton, who scored 48 runs in 23 balls with the help of four fours and four sixes. Although Punjab made a comeback with the help of Yuzvendra Chahal and restricted Mumbai to 89 for 3, Tilak Verma took charge of the innings with an unbeaten 75 off 33 balls.
Tilak first added 61 runs with Sherfane Rutherford and later completed the chase with Will Jacques. He also hit two sixes in the last over and gave the team victory with one ball remaining.
With this defeat, Shreyas Iyer's record of defending a score of more than 200 in IPL was also added. As captain, Iyer has lost seven such matches so far in the league. Of the 20 IPL matches where his team scored more than 200 while batting first, his teams won 12, lost seven and one resulted in no result. No other IPL captain has lost more than five such games, while only Faf du Plessis has lost so many matches in the entire T20 cricket.
