NZ20 launch postponed to December 2027

new zealand cricket have announced that they are pushing back the proposed launch time for the official NZ20 to the summer of 2027–28.

NZC said that despite the benefits of the tournament concluding in protecting New Zealand's domestic cricket infrastructure, additional time would be required to complete the launch and operational plan for the tournament. The original planned launch date was January 2027.

“Our focus is on ensuring that the future of domestic T20 cricket in New Zealand is sustainable, competitive and in line with the global game. We are working closely with NZ20 and are encouraged by the progress made so far. Taking the additional time now will help ensure the competition is successful in the long term,” NZC president Diana Puketapu-Lindon said in an official statement.

“In the meantime, NZC will make arrangements to continue its Super Smash competitions for the 2026-27 season and host the upcoming tours of India and Sri Lanka men and Bangladesh women,” he said.

One of the major reasons suggested was the international calendar, with Test series against Australia and Sri Lanka scheduled for January and February 2027. Due to this, NZC and potential investors have agreed to revise the possible timeline for the start of the tournament.

Don MacKinnon, Chair of the NZ20 Founding Committee, said, “With growing interest from investors both in New Zealand and internationally, we have made strong progress in partnership with NZC. However, we are determined to ensure that NZ20 launches without compromise and is positioned for long-term success from day one.”

He added, “It is also important that the competition is with international cricket, not against it. Now that the international schedule has been confirmed, the window available to 2027 is very short. This revised timeline gives us the best opportunity to create a world-class competition that New Zealanders can be proud of and the fans deserve.”

MacKinnon further said that investor interest has also increased since the tournament was announced, and the board is preparing to move forward with a formal process to identify primary investors and potential franchise owners.

He said, “There has been increased interest from potential investors since NZ20 was identified as the preferred option for NZC. As a result, we will run a competitive process to identify the league's primary investment partner, as well as the ownership of the associated franchises.”
