Former Indian cricketer and commentator Sanjay Manjrekar Expressing his support for the appointment of foreign captains in the Indian Premier League, he said that franchises should give priority to leadership qualities over nationality while selecting their captains.
Manjrekar pointed out that many Indian captains have struggled to make an impact in recent IPL seasons, proving that being an Indian player does not automatically translate into captaincy success.
“I think we have seen many Indian captains struggle. You mentioned players like Axar Patel and Rishabh Pant. There are many Indian captains who have not performed well,” Manjrekar told Sportstar.
The former batsman stressed that franchises should focus on identifying the best leaders available, especially in a demanding and fast-paced format like T20 cricket. According to him, a captain's ability to lead the team should be given priority over where he comes from.
“My philosophy is simple: in T20 cricket, you need the best captain available. If it happens to be an overseas player, so be it. David Warner has captained successfully, Pat Cummins has done the same,” he said.
Advocating merit-based captaincy appointments, the former Mumbai batsman admitted that IPL teams often have to consider factors beyond cricket. He indicated that an Indian captain can significantly enhance the marketability of a franchise and help establish a stronger relationship with the fans.
“That said, there is a non-cricket reason why franchises often prefer Indian captains. An Indian captain becomes the face of the franchise and strengthens the brand,” he explained.
Manjrekar said franchises must strike the right balance between building a recognizable brand and achieving success on the field.
He said, “Ultimately, the franchise has to decide what is better for the brand and what is better to win titles. Ideally, the captain should be someone who is a really good leader, regardless of nationality.”
The 59-year-old further highlighted how captaincy can shape the identity of a franchise and influence its popularity among supporters.
“But we should not forget that IPL is also about brand value. An Indian captain naturally attracts more attention. Having someone like Rishabh Pant associating with a franchise, or Virat Kohli leading RCB in the past, creates a different dynamic and gives a stronger identity to the team,” he concluded.
In the history of IPL, only three foreign captains have led their respective teams to the championship. shane warne Adam Gilchrist led Rajasthan Royals to victory in the inaugural edition of the IPL in 2008, Adam Gilchrist won the IPL with Deccan Chargers in 2009, while David Warner led SRH to victory in IPL 2016.
