'It was a very important innings'

Former Indian cricketer Cheteshwar Pujara Karthik Sharma was massively praised after helping Chennai Super Kings (CSK) achieve a comprehensive win against Mumbai Indians (MI) in Match 44 of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 at the MA Chidambaram Stadium on Saturday, May 02.

Pujara believes that the 20-year-old has done full justice to the faith reposed in him by the Super Kings management ahead of the season as they bought him for a huge sum of Rs 14.20 crore in the mini-auction. Karthik, who scored 54* off 40 balls against MI, was given the task of building a vital partnership with captain Ruturaj Gaikwad and he performed well in pressure situations.

“It was a very important innings for the youth Karthik Sharma. CSK has shown a lot of faith in him and given him many opportunities. This match against Mumbai was the best platform for him to fulfill and repay that trust. He did exactly that,” Pujara said via JioStar after the match on Saturday.

He said, “On a difficult pitch where spin was expected to dominate the middle overs, CSK needed an Indian batsman along with Ruturaj. Karthik stepped up and fulfilled the responsibility. I am really happy for him because he was not scoring runs and there was a lot of talk about his ability. Ultimately, that trust paid off for CSK.”

Notably, Karthik's innings has also helped CSK strengthen its chances of qualifying for the IPL 2026 playoffs. Their win against MI has boosted their chances of making the top four to a great extent. In the next five remaining matches, the franchise needs to ensure wins on at least four occasions to give themselves a real chance of reaching the end of the tournament. He currently has eight points Mark sheet After four wins in nine matches.
