'It seems that you are constantly being asked questions regarding captaincy in IPL'

KL Rahul After switching from Lucknow Super Giants, he presented a different version of himself with Delhi Capitals in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025. He scored 539 runs at a superb strike-rate in 2025, but only played as a specialist, despite Rahul being discussed as a potential captain for the team before the season. However, he turned down the offer and eventually played under Axar Patel.

The main reason for not choosing captaincy in this rich tournament is to be a target of criticism not only from the coach or the dressing room, but also from the team owners. Pointing to his apparently infamous episode with LSG team owner Sanjiv Goenka, Rahul said owners are not made to ask questions about on-field tactical and strategic applications.

“It feels like you are constantly being asked questions about captaincy in the IPL, why did the opposition score 200 and you scored 120, why are they getting more spin. Some of these questions are never asked to you throughout the year because the coaches know it,” KL Rahul said in conversation with Jatin Sapru on Humans of Bombay.

Rahul was recently announced as one of the retained players for Delhi Capitals ahead of the 2026 season. He is expected to once again play the role of a specialist batsman, as he did last year, batting at multiple positions, as well as occasionally keeping wickets. After a stellar season with the bat, the Karnataka cricketer will once again be banking on his abilities to help the team qualify for the playoffs as well.

Last year, DC finished fifth in the points table and missed out on a place in the top four. The Delhi-based franchise is one of the teams playing the IPL since the inaugural edition, however, they are yet to taste fame. With a strong list of retained players and quite an impressive purse in the IPL 2026 auction, DC will be aiming to create a title-winning combination.
