In the Indian Premier League (IPL), The Player of the Match Award is usually given to a player whose brilliant performance leads his team to victory. However, such extraordinary cases have come up where the losing players have made such extraordinary demonstrations that they still went with the prestigious award. Over the years, there are such rare examples.
While cricket is a team's game, personal talent can sometimes decide the result of the game. Whether it is a loud magic with the ball or a brave knock with the bat, these performances remain unforgettable despite the end of the team in favor of losing. In particular, the first player in the IPL was designed for the match award due to one defeat, Srivat Goswami in the 2008 inaugural edition.
Goswami, who played for Royal Challengers Bangalore, scored 52 off 42 balls against Delhi Daredevils (now Delhi Capital). The game won by Delhi by five wickets, however, Southpo was the highest scorer of the game and was awarded the award. The same year, Chennai Super Kings all-rounder Albie Morkel became the second year to join the list.
Interestingly, in the 2009 IPL finals, RCB faced Deccan Chargers (Defunk Team), when Skipper Anil Kumble produced a spectacular spell, picked up 4/16 and limited the chargers to 143. However, their efforts were wasted. Kumble remains the only player in IPL history to win the Player of the Match Award in the final despite being in favor of losing.
Surprisingly, Yuvraj Singh IPL is the only player in history to receive the Player of the Match Award twice to lose. In 2009, he played for Kings XI Punjab (now Punjab Kings) against Bangalore -based franchise, scored a significant fifty and took a hat -trick, but his team was reduced. In 2011, leading the Pune Warriors (Defont Team), he scored an unbeaten 66 and took four wickets against the Delhi -based franchise, yet ended on the losing team. In particular, Yuvraj Singh also had a notable IPL career, who is ever ranked among top artists despite winning IPL Orange CapThe highest run-scorer of the tournament was honored.
In 2018, Ankit Rajput gave one of the best bowling performances in IPL history, playing the role of Punjab against Sunrisers Hyderabad. SRH was in initial trouble, defending just 132 runs as Rajput ended his top order with three wickets inside the powerplay. He later returned to finish the five wicket race while finishing with 5/14 figures. Despite his talent, SRH succeeded in protecting his low clan, causing Rajput to win a defeat to win the match award due to a defeat to the first unkapped Indian player.
