Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) produced a brilliant all-round performance to register a stunning five-wicket win over Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in Match 63 of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Monday, May 18.
The win sealed SRH's place in the playoffs, while CSK's campaign suffered a huge setback in the business end of the tournament. After restricting Chennai to a lower-than-usual score on a slow Chepauk surface, SRH chased down the target comfortably thanks to composed innings from Ishan Kishan and Heinrich Klaasen.
pat cummins Also played an important role with the ball, leading from the front with sensational spells in conditions that were perfectly suited to his style of bowling. Former South African wicketkeeper-batsman Mark Boucher praised Cummins for his calm leadership and exceptional game awareness during crucial matches.
“Cummins was brilliant. He assessed the conditions brilliantly and understood early on that the pitch would start to slow down and the ball would catch a bit. These were the conditions that suited Pat Cummins perfectly. After taking three important wickets, he really led from the front. What I really admire about him is how he goes about his business. He is an incredibly talented cricketer, but he is also very smart,” he said on Star Sports' Amul Cricket Live.
He further added, “There is never any nervousness, even when he goes for a boundary. He always knows what he has to do with the next ball. He doesn't chase the game or change things unnecessarily. He remains calm, sticks to his plans and executes them with clarity. He led from the front and his teammates followed him brilliantly.”
Klaasen, on the other hand, once again proved why he remains one of the most dangerous middle-order batsmen in T20 cricket. Going into a slightly tricky phase of the chase, the South African batsman responded brilliantly and shifted the momentum decisively in SRH's favour.
Boucher was particularly impressed Clasen's The innings was termed a “masterclass” in approach against spin and handling pressure situations.
“I think he should open an academy and teach the rest of us, because he was a masterclass. On a wicket that was stopping and turning, he came up with a clear plan. He used his footwork brilliantly, allowing him to reach both sides of the wicket. He also focused on playing squarer, which was the right choice, as seen with the reverse sweep he did. I really admired his intent. Which he showed. At that stage, the game seemed to be flowing a bit, and he immediately brought the momentum to the innings. “Once the spinners were removed and the seamers came in, it was a masterclass in getting the pressure back on the bowling side,” he concluded.
Meanwhile, the defeat further complicated Chennai Super Kings' playoff aspirations. The Chennai-based franchise will now have to win their last league game against Gujarat Titans to have any chance of qualifying for the playoffs.
