The mini-auction of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 on December 16 may be a smaller event than the mega-auction, but it could see the presence of unexpected star power. Shreyas IyerIyer, who is currently sidelined with a spleen injury, is expected to lead the Punjab Kings (PBKS) delegation in Abu Dhabi, with fans expecting some action from the captain despite his stage of recovery,
All franchises are required to inform the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) by Wednesday, December 10, about the names of their representatives for the auction. According to Cricbuzz, PBKS has included Iyer's name in its official list. As per BCCI and auction guidelines, a maximum of eight team members can be present inside the auction hall, with an additional six allowed outside, allowing teams to strategically plan their representation.
Sources say that barring any last-minute changes, Iyer is expected to be in Abu Dhabi. The captain had shown great leadership and performance last season and led Punjab Kings to the final after a long gap. He has been out of action since the ODI series in Australia last month, making his presence in the auction a significant morale booster for the team.
However, franchise head coach Ricky Ponting is unlikely to make the trip. Ponting is currently contracted with the Seven Network in Australia for Ashes commentary, with the third Test scheduled to begin in Adelaide on 17 December. While commentary duties are a major reason, the limited scope of transactions of PBKS may also be the reason for their absence. The franchise has Rs 11.5 crore left in the auction and can buy a maximum of four players, including two overseas signings, which will reduce their presence requirement.
Meanwhile, Australia assistant coach Daniel Vettori will participate in the auction despite his Ashes commitments. He has reportedly received permission from Cricket Australia (CA) to travel to Abu Dhabi midway through the series, similar to the arrangement made during the Jeddah auction in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy last year. Among other Australian names, Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) will be represented by head coach and global director of cricket Justin Langer and Tom Moody respectively, adding more star attraction to the event.
