IPL 2026: 'No one is better than him with the new ball'

Jasprit Bumrah finally made his mark in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 season with a brilliant performance against Gujarat Titans (GT) at the Narendra Modi Stadium on April 20. After not taking any wickets in his first five matches, Bumrah immediately dismissed Sai Sudarshan on the very first ball of the innings.

He finished with impressive figures of 1/15 in three overs, and played a key role in helping Mumbai Indians (MI) successfully defend the total of 199. MI captain Hardik Pandya was later asked about Bumrah's impact, particularly about taking a wicket with his very first ball, an early success that set the tone for the match and underlined Bumrah's value even after a quiet start to the season.

“Yes, it is quite interesting. I have seen a lot of people asking why Jasprit has never bowled the first over. But if you see, it has been viewed 151 times and I think eight or nine times Jasprit has bowled the first over. So I don't think it is Hardik Pandya's problem. It is just that Jasprit Bumrah is so special that you can use him wherever you need for the team, not necessarily in the beginning. But today, we realized that we really wanted to make an impact with the new ball,” Pandya was quoted as saying by NDTV Sports.

MI put in a complete performance to end their losing streak in style. The innings was built around a sensational maiden IPL century from Tilak Verma, whose 101 off just 45 balls not only set the total but also equaled the franchise record for the fastest century. After the initial shock from the openers, Naman Dheer provided vital support with consecutive 45 runs, ensuring that the pace never wavered. Pandya expressed clear satisfaction after the match, especially with how the team responded under pressure.

“Very important. Winning away is always challenging. Also, Ahmedabad has not been a pleasant hunting ground for Mumbai Indians, so this is very satisfying. It was about bowling in the right areas and with the right intent. Really amazing effort by the youngsters, and then the fielding had to do well as well,” Pandya concluded.

MI moved up to seventh place in the IPL 2026 points table, now having four points from six matches. Their next challenge is a big encounter against arch-rivals Chennai Super Kings (CSK) at the Wankhede Stadium on April 23.
