Former Indian off spinner Ravichandran Ashwin He believes that Chennai Super Kings (CSK) missed an opportunity by failing to secure Cameron Green in the IPL 2026 mini-auction. Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) eventually signed the Australian all-rounder for Rs 25.20 crore, making him the most expensive overseas player in IPL history.
Bidding for Green started at Rs 2 crore by Mumbai Indians (MI), followed by Rajasthan Royals (RR) and KKR in quick succession. An intense bidding war followed, with the price rising rapidly to Rs 8 crore and then to Rs 13 crore. CSK joined the competition late, taking the price to over Rs 20 crore.
However, KKR showed more determination in the business end of the auction and outbid the five-time champions to land the marquee all-rounder. Reflecting on the proceedings, Ashwin suggested that CSK lacked a clear intention during the bidding process, while he praised KKR for their determination and commitment to secure Green's services.
“We conducted a mock auction, and that's when it became clear that there was almost no chance of them going over Rs 30 crore. In fact, if KKR had been a little more patient – like some of the other franchises, Punjab for example, who took their time while bidding – things could have been different,” Ashwin said on Aish's point.
“If that had happened, CSK would probably have let Cameron Green go a long time ago. I got the feeling CSK were bidding more out of necessity than intention; it didn't seem like they were fully committed to acquiring him. Personally, I thought Cameron Green would have been a fantastic addition to CSK, and in that sense, they might have missed a nice trick. That said, it's not about the price point. Cameron Green A generational talent, and for KKR, he is an excellent acquisition,'' he said.
Talking about Green, the Australian all-rounder has previously played in the IPL for MI and Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB). In 29 matches for both franchises, Green has scored 707 runs at an impressive average of 41.58 and strike rate of 153.69, including one century, while also taking 16 wickets. Green made a strong impact during his stint with MI in IPL 2023 before continuing his all-round contributions for RCB.
