IPL 2026: 'Every team is going to have small blips'

Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) head coach Daniel Vettori backed his team to make a strong comeback after the crushing 82-run defeat. Gujarat Titans (GT) on Tuesday, May 12 in Ahmedabad.

Despite the heavy defeat, SRH are placed third in the IPL 2026 points table. Chasing 169, Hyderabad lost to Gujarat's lethal pace attack, with Kagiso Rabada, Mohammed Siraj, Jason Holder and Prasidh Krishna taking nine wickets as SRH were bowled out in just 14.5 overs.

However, Vettori felt his team performed well with the ball, restricting GT to 168/5 on a batting-friendly surface. SRH bowlers dismissed both Shubman Gill and Jos Buttler cheaply in the powerplay, while Pat Cummins and Prafulla Hinz kept things tight throughout the innings.

Vettori said in the post-match press conference, “We were satisfied halfway through. We knew that coming up against their bowling line-up and the fact that they had five fast bowlers and Rashid, it was always going to be a challenge. We didn't get the starts we wanted and they were able to exploit that all the way through and their bowling was fantastic.”

Although Sai Sudarshan scored a restrained 61, SRH managed to keep them relatively quiet before Washington Sundar's quick half-century gave GT late momentum.

The SRH head coach further admitted that the batting collapse hurt their chase, especially after losing key batsmen like Travis Head, Abhishek Sharma And Ishan Kishan at the beginning of the innings.

“I think you look at the fact that we did a good job of restricting them, obviously the two big wickets of Shubman and Jos in the powerplay enabled us to limit them. But the way they are playing, and on that surface, we are under no illusions. We knew we needed to get off to a good start and we weren't able to do that,” Vettori added.

But despite the crushing defeat, the former New Zealand captain is not worried about his team's morale.

He concluded, “Throughout the IPL every team suffers little setbacks from time to time and our chance was tonight. But I don't see any reason why we won't bounce back.”

After the win, Gujarat Titans have topped the points table with 16 points from 12 matches.
