Former England captain Michael Vaughan was surprised by this jofra archer Was not selected for England's first Test of the home summer against New Zealand, and instead continued to represent Rajasthan Royals in the Indian Premier League (IPL).
Vaughan explains that there is an agreement between the BCCI and the ECB under which the English players are required to remain in it for the entire duration of the IPL. The issue always causes conflict, with England's Test matches starting a few days after the completion of the franchise tournament. The former batsman, however, strongly believes that the ECB should have more control over its players, as the central contract holds more value than any franchise deal.
“I'm sure he will be in the squad (for the second Test). It comes in mid-June. I think we have a problem in English cricket at the moment because Joffra was obviously staying for the full IPL. The ECB have made some contracts with the BCCI which are allowing all our players to stay for the duration. If that's the case, then I have a problem with England contracts because Joffra has been seen to be on a very handsome contract for a few years now. So who holds the keys? Do I believe that international contracts weigh heavily on any franchise,” Michael Vaughan said on Cricbuzz.
von The concern is that, despite Archer being centrally contracted to play for England on a lucrative deal, he is not playing for the Three Lions in a Test match, leading to a feeling that playing in a franchise tournament holds more importance. Playing Tests for one's country should still be the pinnacle for players.
“Look, all these franchise leagues are fantastic. I love them for the players. But I think if we start putting the domestic league above the Test match, then I think there is a real problem now. England have to make a decision as many people have talked about it in the last week, and rightly so, because we feel if you are playing for England in your Test match, the players back home should be playing for England. That's what your central contract says you should do. If I were Rob Key, the director of cricket, or Brendon McCullum, the coach, I would want my best bowler to play in the first Test against New Zealand at Lord's,'' Vaughan said.
Former England players have talked a lot about the rift over playing in the IPL or playing Test matches for the country. Another former captain, Sir Alastair Cook wanted Jacob Bethell to return from his stint with Royal Challengers Bangalore and play for Warwickshire ahead of the Test summer, a move strongly opposed by Kevin Pietersen. However, before this the left-handed batsman had played a single game for the defending champions.
On the other hand, Jofra Archer will play at least two more matches for RR in this season's IPL. However, if they qualify for the playoffs, he will play at least one more match.
Meanwhile, England will begin their three-match Test series against New Zealand on June 4, just four days after the 2026 IPL final.
