'I will remember Vaibhav Suryavanshi hitting 72 sixes'

Former Indian cricketer Sunil Gavaskar has once again praised Vaibhav Suryavanshi After the conclusion of the IPL 2026 season. Gavaskar said Suryavanshi's extraordinary six-hitting ability would be the lasting memory he took from this year's tournament.

The 15-year-old prodigy enjoyed a historic campaign, re-creating several records and emerging as the biggest talking point of IPL 2026. Despite Rajasthan Royals missing out on the title after being eliminated in Qualifier 2, Suryavanshi's performance captured the imagination of fans and experts.

Gavaskar told India Today, “Obviously, what I will remember is Vaibhav Suryavanshi. Vaibhav Suryavanshi batted the way he did, he hit 72 sixes, scored 500 runs in the power play. I mean, it's a phenomenal achievement for a 15-year-old. And it bodes well for Indian cricket in the future.”

Suryavanshi's statistics underline why he became the biggest talking point of this season. The teenage opening batsman finished IPL 2026 as the Orange Cap winner with 776 runs at an average of 48.50 and a whopping strike rate of 237.30.

His tally of 72 sixes broke Chris Gayle's previous IPL record of 59 sixes, which stood for over a decade. Apart from claiming the Orange Cap, Suryavanshi won several individual honours, including Most Valuable Player, Emerging Player of the Season, Super Striker of the Season and Super Sixer of the Season awards.

What made Suryavanshi's rise even more remarkable was not just the amount of runs he scored, but the fearless manner in which he dominated some of the best bowlers in the world. During a conversation with Gavaskar at the broadcaster's post-season programme, the youngster revealed that stories of the great batsman's bravery against West Indies' dangerous pace attack have played a crucial role in shaping his mindset.

With age on his side and expectations ever rising, Suryavanshi's record-breaking campaign has strengthened the belief that Indian cricket has found its next generation batting superstar.
