Former Indian cricketer R Ashwin has expressed his expectations from the captain of Gujarat Titans. Shubman Gill Before the 2026 IPL season.
Appointed captain of the franchise in 2024, Shubman Gill had a stellar season in 2025, scoring 650 runs at a strike rate of 155.88. He is one of GT's most reliable batsmen, and Ashwin hopes to achieve similar numbers again in 2026.
“To get him out in Ahmedabad, he has become like a don these days, it is quite difficult to get him out. So, I think Shubman Gill has nothing to worry about, and if I were him, I would tell myself to go out and plunder runs once again. The best way to hold yourself accountable is to score a lot of runs. He will be the best batsman for GT,” R Ashwin said on his YouTube channel.
Ashwin believes that Gill has the ability to score runs even without working hard to accelerate his scoring. He does not need to chase a high strike rate, which according to the former off-spinner could prove detrimental to GT's season.
“After knowing Shubman and watching him closely, I feel he loves to bat. Scoring runs is a hobby for him. He just scores runs. I have no doubt that Shubman will do the same business of batting as he did last year. If Shubman keeps chasing the strike rate and doesn't score runs, GT will have to struggle a lot. I hope he doesn't do that. Gill has a lot of skill. He can score runs even without chasing a high strike rate. If he plays normal cricket, which shots does he not play? Ashwin added.
Despite being named captain in Test and ODI, Gill was dropped from India's T20 World Cup squad. Ashwin is hopeful that Gill will have a successful IPL season and is also hopeful of his return to the T20 team.
“In the top three of Gill, Sudarshan and Buttler, Gill will really come into the season. We will get another season where Gill will be chasing the Orange Cap. It is also possible that he gets the Orange Cap, because he can and will do anything to get back into the T20 team,” said R Ashwin.
Gujarat Titans will start their season against Punjab Kings on April 1 at the New PCA Stadium, Mullanpur.
