Rajasthan Royals (RR) The 2026 Indian Premier League (IPL) has suffered a major blow ahead of the season as star all-rounder and new signing Sam Curran has been ruled out of the tournament due to a groin injury.
Curran was set to play his first season in Guwahati and Jaipur after being brought in as a trade from Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in exchange for Sanju Samson. RR would have been the England all-rounder's third IPL team after representing CSK and Punjab Kings in the past.
However, the 27-year-old will now have to wait to make his debut for his new franchise after being ruled out of the tournament due to his latest injury. The left-hander's last game was England's T20 World Cup semi-final against India where they eventually lost by seven runs.
According to reports, RR is now looking to secure a replacement for those injured Quran. An official statement should be expected soon as the 2008 champions are set to play their first game against CSK in Guwahati in 11 days' time.
Curran was expected to be one of RR's starting overseas players in the 2026 IPL based on his current good form in England as well as in the franchise circuit, most notably for the Desert Vipers in the ILT20 where he led them to their first title while being named as the Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the tournament.
The England all-rounder was set to get a new lease of life at RR in 2025 after his disappointing season in Chennai. Last time he played just five times for CSK and took one wicket.
The news of Curran's injury comes on a day when both CSK and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) received bad news about their overseas bowlers. The five-time champions have lost Australia's Nathan Ellis to a hamstring injury, while KKR may have to play without Sri Lanka's Mathisha Pathirana, who has not been given a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from his cricket board.
