'For the sake of world cricket' – Graeme Swann urges India to give debut to Vaibhav Suryavanshi against Ireland

Former England spinner graeme swann He has extended his support to young batting sensation Vaibhav Suryavanshi and urged India to give the youngster a chance in the upcoming T20 series against Ireland. Swann described the 15-year-old as “the box-office man of the moment” and believes his inclusion in the national setup is a positive development for world cricket.

Suryavanshi was on Saturday named in India's T20 squad for the tours of Ireland and England, becoming the youngest player to be selected for the Indian team at just 15 years and 71 days. By doing so, he looks set to surpass the long-standing record of Sachin Tendulkar, who made his international debut at the age of 16 years and 205 days against Pakistan in 1989.

Swann expressed excitement over Suryavanshi's selection and said the youngster should be given a chance in the two-match T20 series against Ireland starting on June 26 in Belfast.

“I'm delighted he's been selected for world cricket. He's a box-office man at the moment. I think he should play against Ireland. I wasn't quite sure how well he's been performing in this IPL,” Swann said on GeoHotstar.

The former off-spinner admitted that he initially had doubts whether the teenager would be able to face the challenges posed by top-class bowlers, but the Rajasthan Royals batsman quickly proved him wrong.

“I knew he had talent and he scored a big century in the U19 World Cup final. But I thought the world-class bowlers would find him. There will be too much pace and too much planning against him,” Swann said.

Swann highlighted Suryavanshi's breathtaking performances during IPL 2026, especially his explosive innings in the Eliminator, as proof that the youngster is ready for international cricket.

“The 97 he scored in the eliminator, I've rarely seen that kind of hitting. When he was smashing Pat Cummins all over the field, I was thinking, 'This kid is the real deal,'” Swann said.

The Englishman further said that considering the immense potential of the teenager, India should not hesitate in including him in the senior setup.

Swann concluded, “I don't see any point in not including him, or not bringing him into the senior team, because you've got an absolute world-beater on your hands for the next 20 years.”

Suryavanshi's first Indian appointment comes after a sensational IPL 2026 season Rajasthan Royals. The left-handed batsman finished as the leading run-scorer of the tournament with 776 runs at a remarkable strike rate of 237.30, which included one century and five half-centuries.
