Former Australian opener Aaron Finch has strongly criticized Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) Cameron Green to be retained in the playing eleven despite poor form with the bat in the 2026 Indian Premier League (IPL). This comes after they remained winless in the tournament after five matches after losing to 2024 champions Chennai Super Kings.
Green was signed for Rs 25.20 crore in the mini auction and did not live up to his asking price. This all-rounder has scored only 56 runs in five matches for KKR and has taken one wicket while bowling only twice.
Finch said that no side in the IPL should select players only on the basis of how much money was spent on them in the auction. He also questioned KKR's decision to make him bat at number six despite his struggles against spin.
“Starting against two spinners [Akeal Hosein and Noor Ahmad]He could last only for one ball. But coming out to bat is his worst nightmare [against spin]Especially in run chase. I don't think you ever choose a team based on the price tag. To do so would be truly ignorant. Because buying at auctions is supply and demand for the skill set you bring. It's not about, okay, we have to play this guy because we paid so much for him. He is playing out of position. His best numbers have been at the top of the order, Finch said on ESPNcricinfo.
Finch has suggested that the Knight Riders replace him with New Zealand's Tim Seifert Green In the playing eleven. The 31-year-old was the second-highest run-scorer in the 2026 T20 World Cup with 326 runs at a strike-rate of 166.32.
“You've got Seifert sitting in, he's a specialist opening batsman. Cameron Green hasn't played a huge amount of T20 cricket [recently, because of injuries],'' Finch said. “So you have a guy who brings a good skill set and really good form in Seifert. [T20] World Cup. “Whoever has the scoop, he has the ramp, he has a lot of different options,” he said.
KKR desperately needs a win in their next game against Gujarat Titans in Ahmedabad on Friday, April 17. Another defeat could distance them from the rest of the teams and reduce their chances of making the playoffs.
