talking points
DC choked in powerplay
Delhi Capitals struggled to get ahead as Chennai Super Kings bowlers tightened the noose at the start of the powerplay and dismissed both the openers on low scores. CSK kept the pressure on even after the first six overs, taking wickets at regular intervals and keeping DC on the backfoot throughout the innings.
DC midrange steadies the ship
Amidst the early setbacks, Samir Rizvi and Tristan Stubbs played crucial innings to steady the innings. Their tight partnership ensured that the scoring rate did not drop drastically, with both contributing scores of over 35. He took DC to a respectable total of 155.
sanju samson easy chase
Despite losing a few early wickets, Sanju Samson held firm and proceeded with full authority while chasing the target. He remained unbeaten on 87 runs in 52 balls with the help of seven fours and eight sixes at a strike rate of 167.31. Karthik Sharma provided solid support with an unbeaten 41 as CSK completed the chase with ease inside 18 overs.
who said what?
Akshar Patel (Delhi Capitals), losing captain
(Thoughts on the score) Obviously, the way the wicket was playing in the first innings, I thought yes, 155 was a good score. But since we were playing with eight batsmen, I thought we were about 10-15 runs short. (On the pitch) I think it has got a little bit better, but I think the difference was made by the set batsman. When a batsman is well set, it may feel like there is nothing in the pitch, but I still felt there was something in it. It was not easy for the new coming batsman. Yes, it was not easy for the new players because, you know, the length balls were hitting, sometimes staying down, and sometimes even bouncing after being caught. So I think it was very difficult for the new batsmen. But when set batsmen were playing it seemed easy. You can see how Sanju took the game forward. (About his batting) Yes, obviously, looking at our batting, I think it is positive. The way we finished even after losing five wickets was good. So yes, it is positive. But I think I missed my bowling partner Kuldeep. (On their remaining matches) Yes, obviously, we can't make any mistakes now. Therefore, we have to go in with a clear mindset that whatever time or opportunity we get, we have to win.
Ruturaj Gaikwad (Chennai Super Kings), winning captain
I think even early on after the second and third games, the Flames and I were positive, we were close to where we were last year. Sanju had arrived and was bowling well. Then we got some wins and everyone started rallying. In terms of batting, I am very grateful to have Sanju after the tournament in the World Cup, he is our backbone, but it is the bowlers who do the work. Alil and Jamie come in and work quietly, Anshul is someone who does his work quietly, he had a bad game today, but they have all come together well. We are not really fine, we just tell each other what the wicket is doing and then assess the situation. Then it all depends on how the match is going. I think the skill was already there, there was no development as such, it just needed some speed. We were also chasing a bigger target and did not get time. He got some time in the last match, he can play the all-round game and attack the pocket well.
Sanju Samson, Player of the Match
They are calling me Chetta but I like Sanju more… (laughs) I am working a bit on my initial movement and it is going well. I have been doing this for the last few years and it is also tactical, it depends on the bowlers and how you want to deal with them… Honestly, I have always been like this (calm), but now you are seeing me more in the middle, so you feel I am calm, even outside I am calm. Looking at what we were chasing, how the wicket was behaving, even though we were at 35 for no loss in the powerplay, we could have taken advantage in the middle overs. I had to be a little more selfish to score a century so I thought let's win the game… finishing not out, winning the game gives you more satisfaction.
