gloucestershire fast bowler david payne Has been ruled out of the upcoming season of T20 Blast due to ankle injury. Payne suffered an injury during the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 season, after which he also had to withdraw from the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) team. He himself was a replacement for Jack Edwards. He had played only one match in the IPL before getting injured.
Now Payne will undergo ankle surgery. He believes doing so will prolong the 35-year-old's career as he is confident of playing T20 cricket around the world, having previously had successful performances for Desert Vipers and Perth Scorchers in the ILT20 and Big Bash League respectively.
“I am absolutely gutted to miss the Blast and I am so sorry to all my supporters. The decision to have surgery was incredibly difficult and was only made after every effort was made to get me back to playing,” Payne wrote in a post on his official Instagram account.
He added, “Ultimately, this is the right decision for my long-term career, and I am extremely grateful to all of the club's coaches and medical staff for their incredible support throughout this process. I will be cheering the team on from the sidelines and look forward to seeing everyone on the field soon.”
Naturally, Payne's presence will be greatly missed. gloucestershire dressing room during the 2026 season of the T20 Blast, as he has been performing brilliantly for the county club over the years. In 2024, he was the leading wicket-taker for the club, taking 33 wickets in the season. This included a brilliant spell of 3 for 27 in the final, where the Gloucesters faced and defeated the might of Somerset. The club has not yet made any announcement regarding Payne's replacement.
