'CSK should focus on its purple patch'

Sarfaraz Khan has been in his best form in white-ball cricket in the current Indian domestic season. Former India all-rounder Ravichandran Ashwin believes that Chennai Super Kings (CSK), who acquired his services for Rs 75 lakh in the IPL 2026 mini-auction, should give him a chance.

During the first phase of Ranji Trophy, Sarfaraz He could not leave any mark as he scored runs at an average of 29.67 in six innings. However, he became a different beast altogether in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2025. The right-handed batsman scored 329 runs in seven innings at an average of 65.80 and a strike rate of 203.08. He continued that form into the Vijay Hazare Trophy, where he scored 220 runs in three innings at an average of 110 and a strike rate of 170.54.

The 28-year-old played a brilliant inning of 157 runs off 75 balls against Goa at the Jaipuria Vidyalaya Ground in Jaipur on Wednesday, December 31, after which he earned praise from batting great Ashwin for his selection in the CSK starting line-up in IPL 2026.

“100*(47), 52(40), 64(25), 73(22) in SMAT. This form has carried over seamlessly into Hazare with a score of 55(49), followed today by a blistering 157(75) with 14 sixes. It is particularly impressive how he eliminates spin in the middle overs with his sweeps and slog sweeps. 'Avan Kadhwa Thattala, Idichi' 'Odachitu Irukan.' (He's not knocking the door, he's breaking it down) CSK should surely ride out their purple patch by giving him a place in the playing XII? The abundance of bats is a real problem for men in yellow clothes this season! Can't wait for IPL 2026!” Ashwin tweeted.

As Ashwin mentioned, the five-time champion has multiple batting options in his repertoire. While they have traded Sanju Samson into the setup, there are players like Ayush Mhatre, Urvil Patel, Dewald Brewis and captain Ruturaj Gaikwad who are expected to take up positions in the batting order. Additionally, uncapped players Karthik Sharma (wicketkeeper) and Prashant Veer (all-rounder), who were signed for Rs 14.20 crore, are likely to feature in the CSK line-up from the start of the season.
