Chennai Super Kings have reportedly joined the race to sign Mumbai Indians captain Hardik Pandya ahead of IPL 2027, in what could turn out to be one of the biggest business stories in IPL history. The Yellow Army's sudden interest in the star all-rounder comes after the blockbuster swap of Rishabh Pant and Kuldeep Yadav between Delhi Capitals and Lucknow Supergiants a few weeks ago, indicating an aggressive trade window ahead of the next season.
There has been increased activity in the IPL trading market since the season ended in May. Lucknow Super Giants and Delhi Capitals have completed a major swap of players, involving Rishabh Pant and Kuldeep Yadav, in a deal that could significantly impact the balance of power in the tournament. Pant accepted a revised salary of Rs 15 crore, which is much lower than the Rs 27 crore contract he got after becoming the most expensive player in IPL history in the 2025 mega auction. In return, Lucknow acquired Kuldeep Yadav for his current contract value of Rs 13.50 crore. Now, CSK's entry into the Pandya bidding war has intensified speculations about the franchise's rebuilding plans.
CSK faced competition from many franchises for Pandya
According to reports, CSK has now joined KKR in the race to sign Hardik Pandya for IPL 2027 after Kolkata Knight Riders emerged as serious contenders for the India all-rounder. However, the race for the star all-rounder is far from a two-horse affair. Seven IPL franchises have shown interest in Hardik, with only Royal Challengers Bangalore and Sunrisers Hyderabad reportedly not contacting Mumbai Indians.
CSK finished the 2026 season in eighth place with six wins from 14 matches, leading to immediate roster changes. The franchise sees Pandya as a potential cornerstone to reshape their team for the post-MS Dhoni era.
Despite growing speculation, no concrete agreement has been reached between any franchise and Mumbai Indians for Pandya's services. The two sides are negotiating terms, but the timeline is unclear. If CSK promises a historic transfer window, they will need to act decisively if they are serious about landing one of India's biggest T20 stars.
