IPL 2026 is already shaping up to be the most explosive season ever, with the figures indicating why it has been an unforgettable spectacle for fans. With an overall scoring rate of 9.79 by the teams after 35 matches, the run rate in the powerplay has gone up to 10 – the highest in any season.
Fearless talents like Abhishek Sharma, Priyansh Arya, Vaibhav Suryavanshi and Prabhsimran Singh, as well as established names like Ishan Kishan and Devdutt Padikkal, have been trying their best during the initial restrictions on the field.
This trend is also reflected in the number of totals over 200, which has already reached 29 this season, almost double compared to the same period four years ago. This highlights how the approach to batting has evolved dramatically in the format, making totals over 200 prominent and giving fans more reasons to stay glued to their screens.
Seven 200-plus scores have been successfully chased till Match 35, with Punjab Kings making headlines after their mammoth score of 265 in Delhi last week. The record of most chases of over 200 in the IPL 2026 season has already been broken, with SRH (M36 and M41) and RR (M40) also chasing big targets, taking the number to 10, with 34 matches still to be played.
As a result, the ball-per-boundary rate is also an all-time best at 4.5, falling to 3.8 in the powerplay. Meanwhile, the percentage of runs scored through boundaries in the Impact Player era has been steadily increasing and now stands at 64 per cent – once again the highest for the IPL 2026 season. Already on 10 occasions, batsmen have scored fifties in less than 20 balls, two more than last season.
Abhishek Sharma and Vaibhav Suryavanshi jointly scored the fastest half-centuries, both scoring half-centuries off just 15 balls. Suryavanshi features prominently in the list, having achieved the half-century in 15 balls thrice this season – against RCB, CSK and SRH – while also registering his second century of the tournament against the Pat Cummins-led side in RR's first game in Jaipur. Among players who have batted in at least eight innings in a season, Suryavanshi also boasts the highest strike rate (238.09), surpassing Jake Fraser-McGurk's 234.04 for DC in the 2024 season.
Commenting on the dominance of the batsmen so far in the season, Cheteshwar Pujara said:
“This season feels different because it's not just a phase – it's the entire batting approach that has evolved. Yes, the Impact Player rule has given teams the freedom to bowl hard for longer periods of time, but the amount of totals over 200 and, more importantly, the number of times they are being chased is excellent. Players like Vaibhav Suryavanshi, Abhishek Sharma, Priyansh Arya and Devdutt Padikkal are setting the tone with fearless intent, but It's the collective mentality in teams that is different. In today's game, it is no longer about scoring as many runs as possible in fewer balls and hitting as many boundaries while doing so.”
