The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is reportedly preparing to introduce strict rules to save Indian cricket from the trap of “girlfriend culture” during Indian Premier League (IPL) matches, shortly after similar rules were implemented for Indian players in international matches. This issue is making headlines after several high-profile cricketers – hardik pandyaIshan Kishan, Yashasvi Jaiswal and Arshdeep Singh – have been spotted with their respective girlfriends in team hotels, often accompanying them on the team bus.
“We are discussing this amongst ourselves. It will be discussed in the next BCCI meeting. There is no problem with wives and family members staying in the hotel with the players, but we have to be a little more serious about girlfriends,” a report quoted a BCCI official as saying. Awakening.
The official further said that implementing this rule first helped the board eradicate the culture in the Indian team, but it was limited to wives and immediate family members and did not specify girlfriends. “We have made this rule and something has to be done about the IPL as well. Earlier in the IPL, girlfriends were not allowed to stay in players' hotels, but now it has become a trend. I spoke to an officer of the IPL's anti-corruption unit about this and he told us that we have been asked to allow wives and 'officially declared girlfriends' to stay together,” the official said.
Another important aspect of the players' girlfriends is that many of them are quite popular on the internet as social media influencers. This poses a risk of team or insider information being leaked, whether unintentionally or not.
An official of the IPL's anti-corruption unit said, “Sir, this is the way we are doing it. It is certain that the BCCI will now enforce strict rules regarding whether or not players can live with girlfriends.”
While international matches do not allow violations of anti-corruption protocols, as the situation is completely under the control of the BCCI, IPL teams are privately managed, and there are ten different franchises, making it relatively difficult for the board to keep track of all the off-field activities.
