Something that has attracted the attention of cricket lovers in the ongoing edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL), is that the on-field umpire are checking the size of bats of many batsmen as they are making their way in the middle. During a weekly review meeting of IPL umpires held last week, it was decided that a gauge test would be done on all the players' bats before starting their innings.
The bats of the openers will be tested by the fourth umpire, before they step on the field, while the following batsmen will be examined by on-field umpires. This is a notable change from pre -exercise, including the fourth umpire test of players inside the dressing room before a match.
This decision has been taken in the middle of the season due to a sudden increase in the number of defaulters. It is understood that some teams have brought to the attention of the authorities that rival batsmen were using the use of bats permissible, especially on the flesh of the blade.
Tuesday, April 15, during a low scoring thriller between Punjab Kings and Kolkata Knight Riders in Mulanpur, two days after on-field gauge-test, bats were put in practice, bats Sunil Naren and Enrique Nortze thwarted gauge-test,
According to the current law, the blade of the bat will not exceed the following dimensions: width 4.25 inches, depth 2.64 inches and edges 1.56 inches. In addition, it should be able to pass through bat gauge.
Other instructions are:
- Except for size 6 and low bats, the overall handle will not exceed 52 percent of the total length of the bat.
- The material to cover the blade will not exceed 0.1 cm in thickness
- The maximum permissible thickness of preserved material placed on the toe of the blade is 0.3 cm
The teams have been informed that the batsmen will have to check their bats before they get out of the beach. None of the teams has so far opposed this change.
In addition, the umpires have been asked to be a little more thoughtful by punishing the players for their ceremonies. It comes in view of criticism which came after the fine of Lucknow super veterans' (LSG) leg-spinner Digwesh Rathi twice in the tournament.
The umpires have also been instructed not to check with the captains whether they want to withdraw their appeal for a non-strayer and run-out and will hinder the area. Earlier, the umpires were instigated to ask the captains whether they wanted to withdraw their appeal in such situations.
The IPL 2025 has come in about half the way with the top four races every week. Delhi Capital, Gujarat Titans, Royal Challengers Bangalore and Punjab Kings currently hold the first four positions. However, mid-table teams are breathing their neck, and people like Chennai Super Kings and Sunrisers Hyderabad have shown signs of revival.
