Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) Head coach Abhishek Nair has urged the youth of the team to do something special after the retirement of star all-rounder Andre Russell.
Russell has been one of the all-time great players of the Indian Premier League (IPL). The former West Indies all-rounder joined the three-time champions ahead of the title-winning season in 2014 and scored 2,593 runs and took 122 wickets for the franchise.
NairHowever, KKR looks at the huge hole in the lineup with positivity as it opens up a huge opportunity for young players to come out of Russell's shadow and show their true potential.
“andre russell Has been the flag bearer of this franchise. So, over the last few years, what he has done in T20 cricket, I think it will be difficult to repeat. This is the season of opportunities. Yes, you made some mistakes with the bowling,” Nair was quoted as saying on ESPNcricinfo.
“Obviously, we expect every player to be true to their ability and try to ensure that they make a name for themselves. But having said that, these are opportunities created for a lot of young cricketers in our set-up who can put their name to this franchise legacy and then build their own brand name,” Nair said.
Nair believes that the void left by Russell can be filled by players like Rinku Singh and Ramandeep Singh. The latter is also a useful bowler who can bowl an over or two if required.
“Rinku has opened for India for many years. Raman opened for us in the season when we won the championship. So, we are fully hopeful that he can repeat the performance and use this opportunity to create something special for himself and this franchise.”
Russell announced his retirement ahead of the 2026 mini-auction and took up the role as KKR's power coach. As a look-alike replacement, the 2024 champions spent big to acquire the services of Australia all-rounder Cameron Green for Rs 25.20 crore.
The Ajinkya Rahane-led side will begin their 2026 IPL season against Mumbai Indians on Sunday, March 29. The Kolkata-based franchise will be hoping for a much better season than last year, where their title-defense campaign saw them finish a disappointing eighth.
