Veteran Indian batsman Rahul Dravid recently opened up about the tragic stampede during the Royal Challengers Bangalore's IPL victory ceremony on 4 June and expressed grief over the incident that 11 people claimed and injured more than 50. Former India captain and coach, who lives from Bengaluru, shared his condolences and revealed how a moment of sports ceremony turned into a tragedy.
After waiting for 18 years, on June 3, the victory of RCB's historic IPL title started a festival -like festival in Bengaluru. To celebrate this achievement, RCB held a ceremony in Bengaluru the next day, including a winning parade from the Vidha Sauda to the prestigious M Chinnaswamy Stadium.
However, the plan that was planned as a home return turned into frightening chaos. The tragedy forced RCB to cut its fans-sancitation program at the stadium immediately. The franchise announced a compensation of INR 10 lakh to the families of each victim, while many officials faced legal consequences.
The incident led to the resignation of Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA), a Shankar and Treasurer ES Jeram, resigned and made significant organizational changes, citing moral responsibility for the accident. RCB's marketing head, Nikhil Sosel, was arrested in connection with the incident, and an FIR was lodged against the franchise. In particular, Dravid, who currently serves as the coach of Rajasthan Royals, refrained from entering the political defects after the tragedy.
