Captain of Chennai Super Kings (CSK) Ruturaj Gaikwad Their defeat to Punjab Kings (PBKS) on Friday, April 3 was largely attributed to a bad day for their bowling department. The five-time champions have now lost their opening two matches of the 2026 Indian Premier League (IPL), and find themselves bottom of the standings.
Despite scoring a competitive 209 runs on the board while batting first, Shreyas Iyer's side suffered a five-wicket defeat to CSK after chasing the target with eight balls to spare. The hosts' bowling lacked control, with players like Iyer, Cooper Connolly and Priyansh Arya able to score freely. Later, after opening the batting, he was declared Player of the Match after his quick innings of 39 runs in just 11 balls.
Gaikwad said CSK had ample number of pace and spin-bowling options in the run chase. However, neither department lived up to expectations, which ultimately led to them losing the match.
“We thought we had three seamers, and obviously we had two good wrist spinners who bowled together, especially in the middle after the powerplay. We thought that, you know, would help. But I think, you know, a bit of an off day for both of them. So, I think, that's what hurt us. Sometimes we performed really well. Sometimes we didn't perform at the right time. There was a time when it (needed) The run-rate was 11, and there were some good overs. We just couldn't get the pace (with the ball) in the middle,” Gaikwad said after the match.
Matt Henry and Anshul Kamboj both took two wickets each. However, they were by no means effective in the game, with economy rates of 13.50 and 11.72 respectively.
Chennai Super Kings They have little time to regroup after the loss to PBKS. The yellow team will now take on defending champions Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium on Sunday, April 5.
