Former batsman of India and Royal Challengers Bangalore Abhinav Mukund Lucknow Super Giants have been critically analyzed after the franchise suffered a heavy defeat in the opening match of IPL 2026. Facing Axar Patel-led Delhi Capitals, LSG failed to defend a target of 144 runs in their first match of the season at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Stadium in Lucknow on Wednesday, April 01.
Mukund has said that he is not too sure about the strengths and weaknesses of the Lucknow-based team. He made a direct comparison between LSG and Gujarat Titans, saying that the latter has been more effective despite not having an ultra-aggressive mindset. He believes that Lucknow lacks identity as a team.
“I am very unsure about LSG. They are a very young team in the IPL. There are also Gujarat Titans, who are slowly building their identity. They may lose their first game, but you know what Gujarat Titans will do on a given day. They are at the top. They rely on their bowlers. They rely on their experience in the middle in terms of their spinners. With Lucknow, you always feel like there is no identity within the team,” Mukund pointed out. ESPN Cricinfo.
Despite strong performances in the first few seasons of the IPL in 2022 and 2023, LSG failed to win the title. With a new approach and changed identity, the results for the franchise are still nowhere in comparison to GT, who entered the IPL at the same time but won a title in their first attempt and made the playoffs three times, including two final appearances.
LSG will play its next match on 05 April against Sunrisers Hyderabad at Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium. It will be interesting to see whether Rishabh PantThe leadership team was successful in getting their IPL 2026 campaign back on track, as the franchise still awaits its first IPL silverware.
