Former Indian off-spinner R Ashwin has supported Jasprit Bumrah Despite his wicketless start in the 2026 Indian Premier League. This top fast bowler has not got a single wicket yet after four matches. Despite this, he has been able to control the flow of runs, bowling at an economy rate of 8.53.
Ashwin believes that Bumrah's role goes beyond the wickets, especially on a ground like Mumbai's Wankhede, where the wicket is batsman-friendly and the boundaries are short. According to Ashwin, his role in stopping the flow of runs for the team is more important than his taking wickets.

Mumbai Indians have had a poor performance with the ball in 2026, taking just 14 wickets in four matches at an economy rate of 11.19, the worst in the tournament. Ashwin said that taking wickets is not the job of just one bowler, but the job of the entire bowling unit.
He said, “When you can't bowl consistent overs, your wicket-taking ability depends on your partners who hand you the ball. We have had many years of T20 cricket now and bowling in partnerships as a defensive group is still a seed in the minds of bowling groups. Malinga proved this brilliantly when he made his point during the 10th over.”
On 12 April, Mumbai Indians lost their third game of the season, losing to Royal Challengers Bangalore. They scored 240/4 in the first innings, which the five-time champions failed to achieve and fell behind by 18 runs. Bumrah was the most economical bowler for MI, giving away 40 runs in his four overs, but was unable to take a single wicket.
