Nairobi’s Ruaraka Sports Club ground witnessed history on Wednesday as Zimbabwe showed great intent from the first ball. He scored fifty runs in 3.2 overs. Tadivanashe Marumani scored quickly in just 13 balls. The team’s century was reached before the powerplay was completed and from there it was a practice to see how far they could send the ball into the stands. The innings contained a total of 57 fours – also a T20 record – with four Zimbabwean batsmen contributing fifty-plus scores – another record. Brian Bennett scored 50 off 26 and Clive Mandande scored 53 off 17 with a six off the last ball of the innings.
The Gambia, the smallest country in western continental Africa, could do little to stem the flow. Musa Jorbateh gave the most runs by a bowler in a T20, with 93 runs in his four overs. He was one of five bowlers to concede 50 or more runs in his spell. The team is still looking for its first win in the Africa sub-regional qualifiers, having given walkovers to its opponents Rwanda and Seychelles in the first two matches, while Zimbabwe has already won four out of four.
