RCB gets conditional approval to host IPL matches at Chinnaswamy Stadium, talks ongoing with Karnataka government

After discussions with the Karnataka government, Royal Challengers Bangalore has received conditional approval to host Indian Premier League matches at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. The development took place after a meeting which was attended by Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) officials, RCB representatives and Home Minister G Parameshwara. Although the permission is not yet final, the state government has indicated a positive stance, with a decision expected after further consultations later this week.

Cricket activities have been suspended at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium since June last year after a tragic stampede during RCB's IPL title celebrations, which resulted in the death of 11 people and injuries to several others. The incident raised serious concerns over crowd management, security measures and citizen coordination, leading authorities to halt major events at the venue. With the IPL around the corner and Bengaluru being an important host, KSCA and RCB are actively engaging with the state government to secure permission under stringent conditions.

KSCA president and former India cricketer Venkatesh Prasad confirmed that the association facilitated a meeting between RCB officials and the Karnataka government to discuss hosting IPL fixtures at the prestigious venue. Speaking to reporters, Prasad said the Home Minister was supportive and assured that the matter would be reviewed immediately.

“We are facilitating this meeting between RCB and the government. KSCA, from our side, we wanted to meet the government and all the officials, and we have done that. They have been very supportive, and they have guided us to ensure that we have these matches here. Today we brought the RCB representatives, and we had a very good meeting with the Home Minister. We are very grateful to Parameshwara ji. And he promised us that he will have another meeting with the committee that he formed. I am sure that they will take a decision on hosting the matches as soon as possible, as the BCCI will have to prepare a plan in terms of venue, venue and venue. Since RCB won the game in 2025, obviously the opening ceremony has to be held here,” the KSCA president said, adding that the Home Minister has promised that he will arrange a meeting with the committee and the opening ceremony. Will facilitate everything after all RCB matches.”

We will take a decision on Wednesday: Yes God

Prasad also spoke about the logistical urgency, noting that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) needs clarity on venues to plan the event, publish the schedule and finalize the arrangements. He further said that since RCB won the IPL in 2025, the opening ceremony is expected to be held at the Chinnaswamy Stadium, subject to government approval. Home Minister G Parameshwara confirmed that conditional permission had already been granted, but stressed that a final decision would be taken after detailed discussions.

“IPL matches are approaching. KSCA president Venkatesh Prasad, spokesperson Vinay and RCB representatives met me. They asked me for permission, and we have given conditional permission. But they are saying it has to be discussed, so I gave them time till Wednesday. We are calling the BBMP commissioner, police commissioner and law representatives. So on Wednesday, we will take a decision. Discuss all the pros and cons.”
