The franchise cricket season is set to resume once again in Asia, with the Indian Premier League (IPL) and Pakistan Super League (PSL) scheduled to begin in the last week of March 2026. Over the past few years, both leagues have established themselves as major T20 tournaments, attracting global stars and commanding significant financial investments. However, a comparison of the total money spent in their 2026 auction highlights the huge financial gap between the two competitions.
The IPL conducted its 2026 mini-auction in a grand manner, underlining once again its financial dominance in the world of franchise cricket. A total of 77 players were sold, including 29 foreign cricketers. The franchises collectively spent Rs 215.45 crore, indicating the immense commercial strength of the league.
The biggest purchase of the auction was cameron greenWho was bought by Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) for Rs 25.20 crore. The auction also saw record-breaking bids for uncapped players, with Karthik Sharma and Prashant Veer each sold to Chennai Super Kings (CSK) for Rs 14.20 crore, the highest amount paid for uncapped players in IPL history. Each franchise was active in strengthening its team, with many lesser-known players earning life-changing deals.
On the other hand, PSL held its auction in full format for the first time. Although its scale was smaller than that of the IPL, it still generated strong interest. The league spent a total of PKR 210.60 crore, which works out to be approximately Rs 63.18 crore. Several notable international stars including Steven Smith, David Warner and Daryl Mitchell secured lucrative deals. The highest paid player in the PSL auction was Naseem Shah, who got PKR 8.65 crore.
Comparing the total expenditure, IPL's Rs 215.45 crore is less than PSL's Rs 63.18 crore. This difference reflects the IPL's strong commercial ecosystem and global sponsorship appeal. Nevertheless, while the financial figures may differ significantly, both leagues continue to provide high quality cricket and exciting entertainment across the subcontinent.
