Not having Bumrah in early IPL 2025 is a challenge: Mahela Jayawardene

At a press conference held in Mumbai on Wednesday, Jayawardi expressed that he hopes that Ace India's pacer would soon join the team. He further said that the fast bowler is in 'Good Spirits' as he is cured at BCCI's Center of Excellence (East National Cricket Academy) in Bengaluru.

,[Bumrah] Has started its progress now. We have to wait and see what they have [BCCI medical team] The feedback is on him, “Jayawardane said.” At the moment, everything is going well. But, of course, it is on day to day basis. He is in good souls. He does not have a challenge. He is one of the best bowlers in the world and he has been a great supporter for us for many years.

“We will have to wait or get an opportunity to take steps for someone else. It's how I see it. It gives us an element to try some things and sees how things work. The initial part of the season allows us to do so.”

Jasprit Bumrah Has taken 165 wickets in 133 matches so far since he started playing for MI in 2013. In 2013, playing for MI was started. Only the IPL season that he missed as he was starting to play in 2023, when he was hurt in his back.

The MI Squad includes Trent Bault, Deepak Char, Rece Topley and Replacement Corbin Bosch of Lisad Williams along with all rounder Hardik Pandya, Ashwani Kumar, Satyanarayan Raju, Arjun Tendulkar and Raj Angad Bawa. Bumrah's absence would have inspired the management to decide the MI's bowling lineup as Trent Bault and Deepak are four powerplay bowlers.

According to reports, Bumrah is yet to recover from his stress -related back injury which has been excluded from action since January and may join the MI team in April. He injured his back on the second day of the final border-Gavaskar Trophy Test in Sydney on 4 January. Bumrah was then dropped from the Champions Trophy, which India won last month. This is the first time Bumrah has become ill with a back injury since March 2023 surgery.

MI's first two IPL 2025 matches are away. He starts his campaign in Chennai against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) on 23 March and later against the Gujarat Titans (GT) in Ahmedabad on 29 March. The first domestic game of MI is two days later, as they welcome Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) on 31 March. Bengaluru (RCB) on 7 April.
