'Need to move on from our aging stars' – Anil Kumble on CSK's Ravindra Jadeja trade

Former Indian cricketer Anil Kumble believes Chennai Super Kings When it comes to the upcoming IPL season, it would be better to rely on young and fresh talent rather than old players. CSK finished at rock bottom for the first time in their IPL history in 2025.

Kumble justified his opinion by highlighting the trade of Ravindra Jadeja to Rajasthan Royals after eight consecutive seasons of service to the franchise since 2017.

Speaking on a show on Geostar, Kumble said, “CSK will likely build their batting core around captain Ruturaj Gaikwad, Dewald Brevis and Shivam Dubey in the top six. They need to move on from their aging stars, as evidenced by Ravindra Jadeja's trade move to Rajasthan Royals.”

Kumble said Pathirana's release means CSK will need to strengthen their fast bowling unit to complement players like Nathan Ellis and Khaleel Ahmed.

He said, “After releasing Pathirana, their bowling needs to be strengthened. Nathan Ellis has become important as their overseas fast bowler, while Noor Ahmed is the wrist spinner. They still need an Indian spinner in place of Jadeja and more Indian fast bowlers with Khalil Ahmed. Another overseas fast bowler will also help balance their attack.”

The former Indian leg spinner also said that he is happy with Ruturaj Gaikwad being appointed captain again after his injury last season. He believes that Gaikwad should open the batting with Ayush Mhatre or Shanu Samson.

Kumble concluded, “It's great to see Ruturaj Gaikwad back as the captain of Chennai Super Kings after being injured last season. My clear advice to him is to open the batting himself. While they have Sanju Samson and the promising Ayush Mhatre, Ruturaj is best suited as an opening batsman for CSK. His leadership and batting at the top will provide the much needed stability to the team.”

Ahead of the mini auction for IPL 2026, the Men in Yellow have retained 16 players, leaving them with nine available slots and a purse of Rs 43.4 crore. The auction will take place on December 16 at the Etihad Arena in Abu Dhabi.
