Ahead of the Indian Premier League 2026, Bangladesh fast bowler Mustafizur Rahman is at the center of a major controversy after threats were issued by religious leaders in Ujjain. The warning comes amid growing anger in India over recent violent attacks on members of the Hindu minority community in Bangladesh.
Mustafizur, who was bought by Kolkata Knight Riders for Rs 9.20 crore in the IPL 2026 mini-auction in Abu Dhabi, is the only Bangladeshi cricketer selected this season. However, there has been a strong reaction to their inclusion, including calls to boycott KKR and threats of pitch invasion during IPL matches if they are allowed to take the field.
Meanwhile, KKR's decision to sign Mustafizur has been considered insensitive by some groups. Social media platforms have been flooded with posts criticizing both the franchises and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) for allowing Bangladeshi players to participate in the league.
Several followers of Ujjain, including Mahavir Nath, the chief priest of the Ranamukteshwar Mahadev Temple, have issued a stern warning, saying that ascetic groups may attempt to storm the stadium and disrupt matches involving the Bangladeshi fast bowler. He accused Indian officials of ignoring the persecution of Hindus in Bangladesh while continuing sporting ties.
Religious leaders also threatened to vandalize pitches if Mustafizur was allowed to play, raising serious security concerns for IPL organisers. Other watchdog groups have also shared similar sentiments. The controversy poses a significant challenge for the BCCI and IPL officials, especially in terms of security planning. With KKR scheduled to play matches in multiple states, the risk of protests or disruption has become a major issue.
There is also uncertainty over Mustafizur's availability, as the Bangladesh Cricket Board has indicated that his participation may be limited during the initial phase of IPL 2026 due to national duties. In view of the current unrest, there is speculation that KKR may consider resting the fast bowler for the initial matches to reduce the tension.
