Five-time champion Mumbai Indians (MI). Indian Premier LeagueCreated history by becoming the first T20 franchise to play 300 matches. The milestone came during the IPL 2026 clash against Kolkata Knight Riders at the iconic Wankhede Stadium. The team is currently led by Hardik Pandya, marking a new leadership phase for the franchise.
MI joined an elite list in T20 cricket, becoming only the third team to reach 300 matches overall. England's Somerset County Cricket Club was the first to achieve the feat with 303 matches, followed by the Pakistan national cricket team, who recently reached the feat during the ICC Men's T20 World Cup. Among IPL franchises, Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) is second in the list with 287 matches and is expected to achieve the feat soon.
Mumbai's T20 performances include both the IPL and the now-defunct Champions League Twenty20, where they played 22 matches, winning 11 and losing nine. However, it is in the IPL that MI made its legacy. Under the leadership of Rohit Sharma, the team has won five titles in 2013, 2015, 2017, 2019 and 2020. In total IPL matches, MI have registered 151 wins and 122 losses, the most by any team.
Continuity has been the hallmark of Mumbai's success. They have participated in all 19 IPL seasons and have reached the playoffs 11 times, second only to Chennai Super Kings (CSK), who have appeared in the playoffs 12 times. MI has played 22 playoff matches, winning 14 of them and reaching the finals six times, losing only once in 2010 against CSK.
The early years were less successful, with no titles in the first five seasons. His best performance after this came in the 2011 Champions League T20 under Harbhajan Singh. A turning point came in 2013 when Ricky Ponting handed over the captaincy to Rohit Sharma in mid-season. Mumbai won seven of their next nine matches, qualified for the playoffs, and defeated CSK in the final to win their first IPL title.
That victory ushered in a golden era. Between 2013 and 2020, MI emerged as the most dominant IPL team. Under Rohit's captaincy, they won 87 out of 158 matches, which is the highest during that period. MS Dhoni-led CSK finished second with 77 wins.
Mumbai's last title came in 2020, making them the first team to win five IPL trophies and one of the few teams to successfully defend their crown. Rohit led the team until 2023 before handing over the reins to Hardik Pandya, signaling the beginning of a new chapter after one of the most successful eras in T20 franchise history.
