Mathisha Pathirana has got approval to join Kolkata Knight Riders

Mathisha Pathirana Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) have received their No Objection Certificate (NOC) to participate in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026, giving a significant boost to Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) amid a poor start to the season. The franchise struggled initially, suffering three defeats while one match was washed out due to rain.

According to News18, Pathirana is set to travel to Chennai and join the team ahead of the upcoming fixtures. KKR's struggles have been particularly evident in the death overs, where they have failed to contain the opposition batsmen at crucial moments. Defeats against Mumbai Indians and Lucknow Super Giants exposed these shortcomings, making Pathirana's arrival timely.

KKR had invested heavily in the Sri Lankan fast bowler and signed him for a record Rs 18 crore in the auction, highlighting his importance in their plans. However, his availability was uncertain after suffering a left foot injury during the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026, where he managed to bowl only four balls against Australia before leaving the field.

Pathirana previously represented Chennai Super Kings (CSK), where he took 47 wickets in 32 matches and played a key role in their 2023 title-winning campaign. He is known for his powerful action and effectiveness in the death overs and his experience will be vital for KKR's bowling unit, which is lacking consistency, especially due to injuries to key fast bowlers.

The three-time champions' problems extend beyond bowling. They are currently at the bottom of the points table with just one point from four matches. Captain Ajinkya Rahane has faced criticism for frequent changes in the batting order and unstable combinations. Meanwhile, the big-money signing of Cameron Green has yet to make a significant impact, although youngster Angkrish Raghuvanshi has emerged as a rare bright spot.

KKR will next face CSK in Chennai, where spin-friendly conditions could suit players like Sunil Narine and Varun Chakravarthy. With their campaign at a crucial juncture, Pathirana's return could prove crucial in reviving their fortunes.
