Former Indian middle order batsman Ambati Rayudu Virat Kohli has made a sensational comment about his international career after his heroics in the opening match of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 against Sunrisers Hyderabad.
It was a vintage Kohli show in Match 1 of IPL 2026 at the M Chimmaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru, as he comfortably led his team Royal Challengers Bangalore to victory while chasing the target of 202. The right-handed batsman played an unbeaten inning of 69 runs in just 38 balls.
Reacting to the same, Rayudu made a bold claim about Virat's future as an Indian cricketer, saying that the former Indian Test cricket captain should consider taking back his retirement from red-ball cricket.
“I think he should come back to Test cricket. Hopefully as a captain. He has been the best red-ball captain that I have seen at least in Indian cricket. He should do that, the way he is batting, I think it is a disservice to Indian cricket,” Rayudu said on ESPNcricinfo.
He did not stop here, former ally of India Kohli Also said that what he saw from the RCB opener against SRH was just a start, and he expects the right-handed batsman to dominate cricket, especially the IPL, for the next five to six years.
Rayudu further added, “I think his best is yet to come in the IPL. What we have seen is just a trailer. Fitness was never an issue for him. I don't think he will ever have any problems with his physical fitness, being late to the ball or being slow on the field. The only thing that can take him a step back is his mental state. I don't think he is near the end of his career. I still see five to six years of quality in him.”
This great Delhi batsman announced his decision on social media and said goodbye to Test cricket in May 2025. He finished his career as one of India's greatest batsmen in the longest format with 9230 runs in 123 matches. Kohli is considered one of the greatest Test match captains of all time for his impeccable record as captain.
